Last year we had a successful Litter Pick in the village and lots of fun doing it. Besides £20 for registering our Litter Pick, we won £200 in the South Norfolk Council draw for club funds. This year the Litter Pick will be on 30th April. Further information will be posted on this site or on the village noticeboards. SNC information is here.

Do contact us on info@wreningham.org if you want to help organising it, take part, or have suggestions to improve on last year.

A fourth act of vandalism to property belonging to the developers on Church Road has been reported.

Besides being pointless, this just raises the level of insecurity along Church Road, with the builders and in Wreningham as a whole. Where a person has a grievance about some aspect of their life then they should address it in a manner which does not cause concern to others about their property or themselves.

From March the houses will start becoming available for occupation by people new to the village, or indeed some villagers who are thinking to move house within the village. Petty vandalism is not the way to present Wreningham or its residents.

As far as we are aware, no other incident has been reported in Wreningham. If you do see anything untoward or are a victim of vandalism you should inform the Police as soon as you can.

Ricochet TV asked us to inform you about their new television show for BBC, “The repair shop” ( repair shop flyer ). Their team of experts include trades such as blacksmithing, ceramics, clockmakers, upholsterers and carpenters. The show looks into repairing beloved and interesting possessions for people who would like to see them restored or repaired back to their original working order.

They have looked to include items ranging from pocket watches to grandfather clocks, rocking horses to drawn carriages, from toy cars to VW campers. Communities, too, may have items that are important to them: e.g. memorial plaques; eroded statues; snapped weather vanes; broken sun dials; cracked gargoyles; fading carvings, etc.

The show will feature sentimental/interesting items in need of repair and will feature the repair-work of some items in the show with a community value, are treasured or, are essential to communities, but which may have an interesting story and purpose.

If they accept it for the show, the item would be repaired at their repair shop (a barn outfitted for their experts) and returned to the community at no expense to its owner. There would be broadcast TV coverage from start to finish of the item, in the work shop and when it is revealed to the owner or community.

On Saturday, very early (for me), Motion Bear Media started filming scenes for a video commissioned by Norfolk Constabulary. They had obtained prior permission to use the field and I was pleased to offer them access to the facilities within the hall. Just as well since it was a cold and damp day; hot drinks were a must.

Crew & Police Officer

Motion Bear Media is a business venture staffed by students from City College Norwich. They apply their learning and skills for real on live contracts. In this case they are producing a video for the training of police personnel on the subject of vulnerable people – Saturday’s scenes related to a child alone in a park.

Officer approaches girlCar Scene

The police officer (a real one!) observed a young girl (not an actor) apparently alone and unsupervised in a park, considered that there might be an issue and approached her. On gaining her confidence, he took her to the police car in order to take her back home. A simple scenario but one needing tact and care.

Squeaky kitMuch effort was put into making the visuals right, as you might expect, but to see the sound crew gathered around the play equipment to capture the essence of the squeaky chain, and, so many times an empty plastic bottle was recorded dropping onto the ground and bouncing about.

The girl’s parents were on hand to reassure their daughter; her brother and sister kept her feet firmly on the ground! Filming requires much standing around, repeating actions, repeating lines and scrutiny of sound and video. The supervising lecturers made sure the crew were fully focused on progressing the shooting schedule. Even so they did not finish until 11am!

Since it is a police training video it is unlikely that we’ll get to see the finished result. But, it was interesting to watch it being made and to see the two characters played with effortless ease even with the crew gathered closely around them.

On 6 December 2016 the Secretary of State approved an Order to make the whole of England an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone for 30 days, in order to help protect poultry from a strain of Avian Influenza in Europe.  Welsh and Scottish Governments have also introduced identical measures.

Outbreaks of a highly pathogenic strain of Avian Influenza have been confirmed in poultry and wild birds in several countries in Europe. No cases have been found in the UK and this Order is a precautionary measure to help prevent potential infection from wild birds. Poultry keepers are being urged to reinforce biosecurity measures at their premises.

This Prevention Zone introduces mandatory enhanced biosecurity measures and requires the immediate housing of all poultry, or where this is not practical, their separation from wild birds. Other captive birds should also be kept separate from wild birds. Keepers should also ensure that poultry and other captive birds are provided with feed and water that is not accessible to wild birds.

The full Order and its requirements can be seen here –  Avian Influenza Prevention Zone declaration

Further information regarding the latest situation can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu#prevention-zone

Poultry keepers should keep a close watch for signs of disease. If they have any concerns they should seek prompt advice from their vet.

Members of the public are also being asked that if they find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or gulls, or 5 or more dead wild birds of other species in the same location, they report them to the Defra Helpline on 03459 33 55 77.

The 1 Bedroom House for Rent

This home will be acquired by Saffron Housing Trust, and will be suitable for local people in a wide range of circumstances, including a single person or a couple seeking their first home. We expect that shortly before completion the house will be made available by Saffron Housing Trust through an advert on the South Norfolk HomeOptions system.  It may be advertised before the end of 2016.

Anyone already on the South Norfolk Housing Register will need to express their interest (‘bid’) through the South Norfolk ‘HomeOptions’ website www.snhomeoptions.org.uk

Other interested residents who are not on the Housing Register should contact the Housing Advice Service at South Norfolk Council to join the Housing Register (‘HomeOptions’).  They will need to provide proof of residency or working qualification criteria and other verification details.  During the week that the properties are advertised on the HomeOptions system people will need to actively apply ‘(bid’) for them, and the Council’s Housing Officers will provide details of how to do this. For further information telephone for free on 0808 168 2222.

The Shared Equity Houses

The developers will be marketing these houses directly, and intend to publicise them locally.  Mr Keith Mitchell (see below) will be involved to ensure compliance with the local connection requirements. Shared equity operates in the following way:

  • The purchaser buys a long lease for 75% of the equity for 75% of the market value.
  • Saffron Housing Trust acquires the lease from the developer.
  • No rent (or a nominal rent – often £1 per annum) is payable.
  • After 5 years the purchaser has the right to buy the remaining 25% of the equity, but there is no obligation to do so.
